Minarik was working as a first-grade teacher on Long Island, New York, when she noticed the limited children’s book options and decided to write her own. She subsequently took a job as a reporter for the Daily Sentinel, a newspaper in Rome, New York. Minarik studied art and psychology at Queens College in Flushing, New York, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in 1942.
